University students should actively take advantage of various scholarship programs to alleviate the burden of tuition and living expenses. Scholarships are an important financial tool that supports university life and provides opportunities to focus more on academics. This article briefly examines the major types of scholarships available to students at the University of Ulsan, categorized into on-campus scholarships, off-campus scholarships, and national scholarships.

On-Campus Scholarships

On-campus scholarships at the University of Ulsan are broadly divided into major scholarships and newly established scholarships. The main scholarships include the Hope Scholarship and the Merit Scholarship. The Hope Scholarship is awarded to students whose income bracket falls within levels 0 to 3 after applying for the national scholarship. The Merit Scholarship is available to students who have completed at least 12 credits in the previous semester and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, with additional academic criteria considered by each department.

Newly established scholarships include the Competency Development Scholarship, Achievement Scholarship, and Challenge Scholarship. The Competency Development Scholarship is awarded to new students who have obtained official language test scores or certifications. The Achievement Scholarship targets students whose grades have significantly improved in the previous semester or who have raised their grades after receiving an academic warning. The Challenge Scholarship is given to students who earn mileage points by participating in extracurricular programs, with the amount awarded based on their ranking in the mileage system.

In addition to these, there are various other on-campus scholarships, all of which are limited to covering tuition fees only.

Off-Campus Scholarships

Off-campus scholarships are offered by external organizations, corporations, and foundations and are provided based on students' academic performance, major, region, or social contribution activities. For example, the Samsung Scholarship Foundation offers scholarships to students with excellent academic performance and leadership qualities. Additionally, the Blue Lighthouse Scholarship from the Korea Student Aid Foundation supports students from socially disadvantaged backgrounds or those passionate about specific fields. The Korea Leadership Development Foundation Scholarship is designed for students with leadership and volunteerism.

Regional scholarships, such as the Busan Metropolitan City Talent Development Foundation Scholarship, are available for students from Busan and are aimed at fostering talents who can contribute to the development of the local community. There are also corporate scholarships, sponsored by specific companies, primarily targeting students who excel in academic fields related to those companies.

Information on off-campus scholarships can be found through the University of Ulsan’s academic notices or the department offices. It is important to carefully check the eligibility criteria and prepare the necessary documents when applying. Like on-campus scholarships, off-campus scholarships are also limited to covering tuition fees only.

National Scholarships

National scholarships are provided by the government and offer substantial assistance to students facing financial difficulties. The most well-known is the National Scholarship, which is awarded on a sliding scale based on income level, with more support given to those with lower incomes. In addition, various national scholarships are available for students who meet certain academic or specific criteria.

The scholarships available to university students can be divided into on-campus scholarships at the University of Ulsan, off-campus scholarships from external organizations, and national scholarships. Since each scholarship has different application requirements and procedures, students should gather information and prepare in advance. By effectively utilizing the appropriate scholarship programs, students can create an environment conducive to focusing on their studies, and it is recommended to actively consider applying for scholarships.
